Navidad in Mexico has a variety of traditions. The 9 days leading up to Christmas, the children re-enact the plight of Joseph and Mary, searching for an Inn. These are called posadas. Today would be the first day of las posadas. On December 24th a child is placed in a manger and given gifts to represent the birth of the baby. On January 5th children write letters to the Magi in hopes of getting toys. Some attach the notes to a balloon to send. They also put a shoe next to the Christmas tree so the next morning they can find their gifts in the shoe.
