It is a weeklong festival of lights that starts in the middle of December. They have nativity scenes, but they call them portals. In front of the portal, they place fruit and small toys. They decorate a tree, or a coffee bush, or a large evergreen branch, whatever they can find. There are two additional reasons people are happy around the holiday season. All employees get a holiday bonus - by law it has to be equivalent to a months pay. There is also a holiday lottery worth a couple million colones.
